Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public later this week.
